PreS-Gr 2-This cute picture book series features adorable, diverse cartoon characters exploring the planet on different types of transportation. On the Water! explains how boats can use man power, wind power, and engine power to move people from shore to shore, both for fun and for work. On the Tracks! includes trains that go above and below ground (and some even below the water!). In the Air! and On the Road! feature not only people movers, but some kid-pleasing rescue vehicles as well. Again, while the writing is engaging, this is informational fiction is not nonfiction. It's great for imparting information in an eye-catching way, but realistically, our transportation doesn't have adorable smiley faces and tell us helpful tidbits about how it works. As stewards of information literacy, it's important that librarians and educators in the library make sure kids see that distinction and recognize its value. VERDICT It's charming, but it's not nonfiction.

Preschool-Grade 1 *Starred Review* All aboard for a delightful look at a variety of trains around the world! Train fans will be happy to find many types of trains covered, from steam and maglev trains to electric trams. These vehicles appear in settings around the world, some pedestrian and others quite dramatic. Philip's main text is simple and factual, at times reading almost like an early grade social studies textbook. Nothing else about this charming book is quite so straightforward, though. Wood's cartoon illustrations fill each spread with whimsy, and even the font is playful. The expressions on the passengers' and workers' faces capture the special excitement many children feel around trains. The vehicles all have faces, which radiate a similar joy. Occasionally, text appears embedded cleverly in an illustration, such as on a platform sign, and, in the first few pages, the people speak in speech bubbles. Soon, though, the trains start getting chatty as well, and readers will be ready to join in the fun. This offering from the On the Go! series (4 titles) is a treat.
