“Fierce, fascinating and full of insight, Frieda Klein is irresistible.”—Val McDermid, bestselling author of Splinter the Silence
The electrifying fourth book in the internationally bestselling Frieda Klein Mystery series

Frieda Klein is uninterested in catching up on old times when her former classmate, Maddie Capel, shows up at her door—until she hears about Maddie’s troubled daughter, Becky. The teenager claims she was raped in her own bed one night while her mother was downstairs. Her assailant left her with a warning: “Don’t think of telling anyone, sweetheart. Nobody will believe you.” And no one does—except Frieda.

Becky’s story awakens dark memories of an eerily similar incident in Frieda’s own past that she’s been avoiding for decades. When Becky is found hanging from a beam in her bedroom, Frieda returns home, seeking out her old high school friends to ask what they remember about the night that prompted Frieda to leave town for good. But confronting the ghosts of the past turns out to be more dangerous than she ever expected.

Continuing their day-of-the-week titles, the writing duo Nicci French takes psychotherapist Frieda Klein back to her small hometown to investigate a current rape case that may be tied to her own assault more than two decades earlier. Narrator Beth Chalmers infuses Frieda with a level of empathy that keeps the listener engaged even though the plot of the mystery drags significantly and the resolution is disappointing. Chalmers's depiction of Josef, who is Eastern European, is especially strong and consistent, and Frieda's niece, Chloe, sounds authentically cultured--even snobby. However, the Irish dialect Chalmers delivers for teacher Greg Hollisley falters. Nonetheless, Chalmers salvages this audiobook with her narration. J.F. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine

At the start of French’s stunning fourth mystery featuring psychotherapist Frieda Klein (after 2014’s Waiting for Wednesday), a former classmate of Frieda’s from her hometown of Braxton, Maddie Capel, appears at her London office. Maddie is desperate for help with her troubled 15-year-old daughter, Becky. Frieda, who feels no love for Braxton, reluctantly agrees to see Becky, who divulges that she was raped in her bed by a masked man who whispered: “Don’t think of telling anyone, sweetheart. Nobody will believe you.” This strikes a chord with Frieda, who was the victim of a similar crime in her youth, and when Becky apparently commits suicide, Frieda vows to find justice for them both. This visceral read tackles a sensitive subject with empathy, anger, and grace. A skillfully woven plot and deftly drawn characters complement the central mystery, which engages and satisfies while developing the series arc.
