Grades 4-7 In the World Crafts and Recipes series, recipes and art projects introduce readers to a variety of countries rich cultures. Colorful photos show both the original inspirations for the activities as well as examples of childrens projects and culinary creations. An introductory section outlines the countrys history, and sections of text throughout the books provide additional context. In Recipe and Craft Guide to Japan, Mofford loosely organizes the activities based on the seasons of the year, including ozoni soup for New Years and moon-viewing noodles at harvest time. Some of the crafts and recipes require particular skills, special materials or ingredients, and/or help from an adult. The back matter includes a number of further reading suggestions, a glossary featuring both culturally specific and general vocabulary words (although these words are not specially marked in the text itself), and an index. The About the Author page is notable as it highlights each writers personal connection to the country.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
