Fans of Peter Mayle and Janine Marsh will enjoy this exploration of medieval villages, cultures, and recipes of France's Provence. This travelogue is Book 4 in the author's best-selling series, which has won the IPPY gold medal for Best Culinary Travel Series.
Join Carole Bumpus, her husband, Winston, and their friends in Book Four of Savoring the Olde Ways, her culinary-travel series. Following in the footsteps of writer Peter Mayle, Bumpus is on a quest to find the real Provençe. On three separate excursions—from Nice to Nîmes, Moustiers to Marseilles, and San Tropez to San Remy—and while sailing along the Côte d'Azur, she invites you to join her in uncovering the mysteries of Provençe. Are they hidden within their myths, festivals, or traditions? Is it possible they're veiled in the sheer beauty of the land and sea? Could they be concealed in Roman arenas in Arles, Orange, or Glanum? Or, perhaps, within the ancient methods of traditional cooking or winemaking? Maybe they are hidden in plain sight among the locals who open their hearts, their bistros, and homes to strangers.

Yes, you may find it in chefs while cooking in ancient kitchens, in the smile of the shy barmaid who speaks no English, in the giggle of the Pizza Wagon baby, in the agreeable village baker, or in the patient waiter and harbor master—but you will most especially experience it through friends who fling open their doors to share their families' recipes. Traveling alongside Bumpus, that is where you'll discover the real Provençe.

In a salute to the best in travelogues and culinary chronicles, San Francisco-based author Bumpus launches her fourth book in her travel-adventure series (following A September to Remember, 2021). Involving her husband, Winston, and friends, she focuses on Provence and France's Cte d'Azur, summarizing the pleasures of three trips, in 1997, 2000, and 2006. Much revolves around eating, discovering great restaurants and recipes (two are included), and visiting area attractions like wineries, factories, beaches, and historical sites. Bumpus writes in a wide-eyed, almost breathless style, with information to savor and plentiful tips (for one, it's best to use olive oil as soon as it's pressed). The last trip, by sailboat, merges Winston's voice with the author's in rediscovering many of the previous scenes, now from the water. This is a charming introduction to the South of France and excellent reading companion to Peter Mayle's now-classics like A Year in Provence and Toujours Provence.

In Bumpus' travel memoir, curious Americans venture through Provence and along the Cote d'Azur. The author has written two volumes ofSearching for Family and Traditions at the French Table about her travels and what she has learned about French foodways keeping families together. In those books, she got to know the people and their places well enough to coax out the recipes that defined them. Here, she offers something a bit different: the story of a trip to France that she and her sister promised each other they would take once their children were grown. In this narrative, Bumpus isn't settling into one place and getting to know its people. Instead, she functions as something more like a typical American tourist, offering an inviting vision of Americans learning to enjoy themselves in new and unfamiliar surroundings ("suddenly an unexpected energy and exhilaration rose up and I realized, yes, we were at the threshold of our new adventure"). Bumpus seems to be mindful of readers who may feel intrigued--but a bit intimidated--by the thought of leaving their home turf to explore France; she describes chastising her husband (who doesn't know much French) for buyingbeurre andjambon sandwiches...and then discovering that butter and ham make for a delicious combination. The author makes it clear that one can enjoy the beach at St. Tropez while wearing a modest swimsuit, and she recounts her group of friends making compelling discoveries even when their journey didn't go quite as planned. Whether or not this works as a travel narrative--a story one reads just to savor someone else's experience--depends on the reader. Those who identify with Bumpus and her companions may enjoy the interpersonal relationships she details as they explore France together, even though the dialogue seldom feels natural. Still, armchair travelers who have never considered a European tour will find the author to be a thoughtful guide who provides informative descriptions of the sites she visits. A companionable travelog making France accessible to those for whom international travel is a novelty.
