Gr 4-6-Each visually creative book explores the physical features of five related creatures. First, a spread provides general information along with a large illustration. A page-turn leads to a large cutaway view of the animal, with labels identifying key parts. Diagrams are uncluttered, with clear lines, careful color contrast, and simple shading, making the different body parts easy to distinguish. Some captions support the facts from the previous page, while others add new material. Most cutaways mention features common to the broader class along with those specific to the featured animal. The chicken section, for example, notes that all birds have two kidneys, along with more chicken-specific details about brains, combs, and gizzards. The author doesn't usually describe size, which makes sense for broader groups like "ray-finned fish" but would have been useful for narrower examples such as axolotls or lungfish. VERDICT Sure to attract visual learners.
